UP AND DOWN

an autarkic curtain

The thesis “Up and down” combines nature and technique. The curtain is self-sustaining, i.e. it works completely without supply of energy. It responds to the heat that is generated by the solar radiation at the window. Reaching a certain temperature, the textile moves down organically and silently and covers the window area until the solar radiation declines. The idea is to create a perfectly independent clouding that acts in accordance with the natural environment. The substantial components of the textile are wool and wires of a specific alloy, which are able to remember their original shape. Because of their structure the wool fiber achieve heat insulation, temperature compensation and moisture regain. The wire as smart material and technical element facilitates the self-sufficient functionality of the blinds.
