Raum für Erinnerung

Concept, Design and Realization of a Memorial

A new building is established, a slaughterhouse becomes part of the university. As a sign of responsibility towards the history of a locus terribilis, with cautious measures a new memorial to the victims of National Socialism was established at the new location of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, a place of thought and retreat in the daily study routine. In memory of the Jewish women, men and children deported by the slaughterhouse, individual stories and fates of victims and perpetrators, spectators and profiteers are the focus of the memorial site. In contrast to the modern aesthetics of the new building, the historical building itself is the largest exhibit in the exposition. The design of the theme is deliberately reserved and functional. The inserted media can be used in a modular manner and should create a vivid place of remembrance by changing contents.
