Digitale Akustische Kartographie – digital acoustic cartography

 

Digitale Akustische Kartographie (digital acoustic cartography) is an interactive informative graphic that translates acoustic data into visual language. More than ever, modern digital systems act as sensors that can expand our perception, for example, in acoustics. They allow us to capture, process, interconnect and archive complex data in an (almost) unlimited manner. What we lack most of all today are the mapping models and visualizations that enable us to understand and interpret these complex relationships.

The starting point for the visualization was the recordings made with an acoustic camera developed by the Gesellschaft zur Förderung angewandter Informatik in Berlin. Individual acoustic images and image sequences were analyzed and mapped in real time using software specifically developed for this project. The color spectrum served as a distortion matrix that translated the original image into a three-dimensional elevation relief. This method makes it possible to visualize acoustic facets that previously had been very difficult to display. In addition, it facilitates new models for interaction in the analysis of acoustic measurements.
