In 1998, the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology awarded the Bavarian State Prize for Young Designers for the eighth time.

Graduates of design institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as young designers in crafts professions were invited to participate in the contest. To enhance the interest of the economic sector in the State Prize, for the first time people who had completed training in industrial or textile design and were in the early stages of their careers were encouraged to enter the first works they completed on the job.
